Research

I study ancient stellar populations in our Galaxy, the Milky Way.  I am an observational astronomer who uses photometric and spectroscopic observations to determine basic properties of stars.  This includes the surface temperature, surface gravity, chemical abundance, radial velocity and distances to various populations of stars.  I have collaborated on various projects including the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline, a program to determine distances to high velocity clouds, and the Century Stellar Survey.  This research has helped to determine properties of stellar streams (from dwarf galaxy merger events), and the properties of the Galacitic halo and thick disk.
