A postmortem and future look at the personality disorders in DSM-5.

Abstract
:

It might seem difficult to describe the outcome of the proposals by the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Personality and Personality Disorders Work Group (PPDWG) to be a success, given that all of the proposals were ultimately rejected. Nevertheless, one can interpret the result as a step forward, because the final outcome might not have been much different if a more conservative approach was adopted at the outset. The PPDWG did provide a significant contribution to the field through the provision of proposals that will likely generate a considerable body of informative research. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) effort and suggestions for the future are discussed with respect to magnitude of change, documentation of empirical support, and addressing opposition.
