Our research is in the fields of laser spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, chemical catalysis, and materials chemistry. We are interested in spectroscopy of chemically reactive intermediates, solvent- and ligand-free metal catalysis, and laser synthesis and processing of nanomaterials.

1. Laser spectroscopy and mass spectrometry of transient species

We develop and use a variety of spectroscopic and imaging techniques to characterize transient metal-containing intermediates formed in molecular activation and functionalization reactions. These techniques include photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, pulsed field ionization-zero electron kinetic energy (ZEKE) (J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2, 25(2011)), mass analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) (J. Chem. Phys. 152, 144304(2020)), infrared-ultraviolet (IR-UV) resonant photoionization (J. Chem. Phys. 129, 124309 (2008)), and photoelectron velocity-map imaging (VMI) (J Phys. Chem. A 121, 8440 (2017)). In parallel to the laboratory measurements, we perform computational modeling to compare with the experimental spectra. The field is widely open, and we are well positioned as a major player. The new knowledge created from this project includes accurate ionization energies, metal-ligand and ligand-based vibrational frequencies, electron configurations, and molecular structures of the chemical intermediates. Our goals are to come up with general rules or concepts that can be used to predict the formation, structures, and properties of such species present in catalytic processes.

2. Chemical catalysis

We design chemical reactions that minimize the use and generation of hazardous substances, proceed with appreciable rates under a mild condition, and don’t require a tedious process for product isolation. We do chemical catalysis with metal catalysts in solutions, heterogeneous phases, or solvent-free gaseous environment. Metal catalysts are made by laser ablation in situ or as precatalysts. Gas-phase reactions are monitored with time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and reaction intermediates and products are characterized with laser spectroscopy and computations. Solution-phase or heterogenous reactions are tracked with techniques used in modern synthetic chemistry (GC/LC-MS, TLC, NMR, optical spectroscopy, etc.). Solid metal catalysts before and after reactions are characterized with state-of-the-art methods used in materials chemistry (TEM, SEM, XPS, XRD, XAS, etc).  Currently, we work on C-C bond coupling (ACS Appl. Phys. 149, 034303 & 234301(2018), 153, 064304 (2020), 155, 034302 (2021).).  We aim at the fundamental understanding of reaction mechanisms and the development of green, efficient, and selective processes for designing organic compounds with valuable industrial applications.

3. Laser synthesis and processing of nanomaterials

Laser synthesis and processing in liquid is a clean and fast method for producing ligand-free nanomaterials with high-purity surfaces. The laser-generated particles are thus ideal for studying surface adsorbates under ambient environment and for surface functionalization in a stepwise manner. The ability to control the surface functionality step by step makes it possible to tailor nanoparticles for a wide range of applications in optics, energy, catalysis, or biomedicine. We currently work on rare-earth doped (J. Chem. Phys., 153, 064701(2020)) and carbon-based materials (ACS Appl. Nano. Mater. 2, 6948 (2019); Mater. Today Energy 13, 50 (2019), Nano Express, 1, 020018 (2020).). Raw materials for making carbon nanoparticles are cheap and abundant. Rare-earth doped particles show large anti-stokes shifts, sharp emission lines, long luminescence lifetimes, and superior photostability. We investigate effects of particle sizes and structures, surface functional groups, and identities of metal ions on the optical properties of nanomaterials.

Our research activities provide broad training for students and prepare them effectively for promising careers. Our research group consists of students of both genders with diverse cultural backgrounds and has ongoing national and international collaborations. The students in our group have gone on successful positions in technical or educational workforce. Our research activities have been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, Petroleum Research Fund of the American Chemical Society, and Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation.

Instrument

Our group has three laboratories (each 600-1000 sq. ft.), two molecular beam instruments, and apparatus for laser ablation in gas and liquid phases.  Two labs are used for gas-phase molecular activation and laser spectroscopy, and one lab is devoted to the rational design of nanomaterials. Each molecular beam instrument consists of a laser ablation molecular beam source, an oven, a time-of flight mass/ZEKE/MATI/VMI spectrometer, and a computerized data acquisition system.  For vaporization, photoexcitation or photoionization, we use pulsed lasers, which include two excimer lasers (Lumonics PM884, GAM Ex10/200 ArF), nine Nd:YAG lasers (Surelite II/III & Minilite II; Quanta-Ray GCR-3, Lab-190-10 & Lab-170-50; Lumonics YM800), four dye lasers (Lumonics HD-500) with four frequency doublers (Lumonics HT-1000), and an IR OPO (LaserVision) system.

Each of the molecular beam mass/ZEKE/MATI spectrometer consists of two vacuum chambers.  A cubic chamber houses a Smalley-type laser ablation and an oven supersonic expansion source and is pumped by a 2200 L/s oil diffusion pump.  A six-way-cross chamber houses the spectrometer and is pumped by two 400 or 450 L/s turbo molecular pumps.  The spectrometer consists of a two-stage can-shape extraction assembly, a 34 cm long flight tube, and a dual micro channel plate.  The whole spectrometer is encased in a cylindrical, double-layer m-metal shield.

Teaching

 Chemistry 105-General College Chemistry I

CHE 105 covers three parts of general chem.  Part I begins with atoms, molecules, and ions.  The discussion of atomic and molecular structure leads into a consideration of reactions between molecules and ions.  Part II examines reactivity from a quantitative viewpoint.  The question is not what is the product of a reaction, but how much product is formed and what are the energy changes involved?  Part III concerns mainly with intermolecular forces in gases, liquids, and solids.

Chemistry 440G-Physical Chemistry

CHE 440G is a four-credit introductory course in physical chemistry.  It covers thermodynamics, quantum chemistry, and chemical kinetics.  The student body consists of mostly undergraduates.  Weekly problem sets are assigned, quizzes or tests are given regularly, and examinations include two or three midterms and the final.

Chemistry 441G-Physical Chemistry Laboratory

CHE 441G is a one-semester laboratory course accompanying CHE 440G and CHE 446G (Physical Chemistry for Engineers).  The course emphasizes experimental techniques, data analysis, report writing, and safety procedures.  During the semester, students meet twice per week, each for three-hours.  The students enrolled in the course are largely from the College of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences.  In 2001, I developed new laboratory experiments and wrote a new laboratory textbook.  This textbook is now available at the University Bookstore.  The modernized labs remove the outdated experiments, enhance computational chemistry and spectroscopy, and use computerized data acquisition in all the experiments.  These changes aim to enrich student experience in modern laboratory techniques.

Chemistry 547-Principles of Physical Chemistry I

An introduction to quantum chemistry, spectroscopy, and computational chemistry. Prereq: MA 213; PHY 213 or 232.

Chemistry 548-Principles of Physical Chemistry II

Fundamental principles of physical chemistry, including thermodynamics, statistical thermodynamics, and chemical kinetics.  Prereq: CHE 440G.

Chemistry 572-Communication in Chemistry

Reports and discussions on recent research and current chemical literature in seminar format; literature searching methods; resume construction; and preparation of effective presentations, abstracts, and visual aids.  It may be repeated for a total of two credits. 

Chemistry 580-Computational Chemistry

This course provides students with the background and resources necessary to select, apply, and assess computational methods.  The content of the course includes molecular and quantum mechanic methods and their applications in computation of molecular structures, energies, thermochemistry, spectra, and chemical reactions.  The format of the course involves lectures, lab work, literature discussion, and student presentation.   

 Chemistry 668-Symmetry and Chemical Applications

The course content is divided into two parts.  The first part covers fundamental concepts of symmetry elements, symmetry operations, point groups, group representations, direct products of representations, and projection operators.  The second part discusses applications of symmetry arguments to problems in chemical bonding, molecular structures, spectroscopy, and chemical reactions.

Chemistry 772-Seminar in Chemistry Instruction

This course is designed to introduce new graduate students to the teaching, academic, and research activities. The course discussion include academic integrity and intellectual properties, discrimination and harassment, lab safety,  Lab notebooks and grading, scientific seminar and writing.

Chemistry 776-Physical Chemistry Graduate Seminar

Reports and discussions on recent research and current physical chemistry literature.  Required for all physical chemistry graduate students.  It may be repeated up to eight credits.
