Biography:

Kevin Sedeño-Guillén, Ph.D. His articles have appeared in Lingüística y Literatura, Negritud: Revista de Estudios Afro-Latinoamericanos, New Perspectives on the Eighteenth Century, Número, Unión, Revista de Crítica Literaria Latinoamericana, Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, and Revista Iberoamericana, among other journals. Editor-in-chief, Nomenclatura: aproximaciones a los estudios hispánicos. He co-edited the essay collection La narrativa de Mayra Montero: hacia una literatura transnacional caribeña (2008). His recent publications include book chapters in the following volumes: Spanish Republican Exile Geographies (2012), Sociedad y cultura en la obra de Manuel del Socorro Rodríguez de la Victoria: Nueva Granada 1789-1819 (2012), Cuba: artes y literatura en exilio (2011), and María Zambrano: palabras para el mundo (2011). He was awarded with one of the 2013-2014 Cuban Heritage Collection Pre-Prospectus Fellowship.

I completed my Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies with the defense of my dissertation, Modernidades contra-natura: crítica ilustrada, prensa periódica y cultura manuscrita en el siglo XVIII americano [Modernities Against Nature: Enlightened Critique, Periodical Press and Manuscript Culture of the American 18th Century]. In my dissertation, I analyze a problem scarcely addressed--the development of Enlightenment criticism and the literary history of the Americas during the 18th century. The principal hypothesis that I employ to approach this problem is that the criticism and literary history of the Americas of the 1700s have produced a clash in the rhetoric of European natural history. On an epistemological level, “against nature” refers to the strategy of Latin American pundits to redeem America from the dichotomy of civilization vs. barbarism, fleeing the modern complicities of nature, in order to represent American culture at the same level as that of the Europeans.  Latin American modernities are manifested in the necessity of a “counter-natural” position, thus clearing the path for colonial cultures to promote themselves as proto-national enterprises. Within my research, Transatlantic Studies demonstrated the communication and confrontation between the metropolitan culture field and that of the emerging proto-national spaces. From my perspective, it is impossible to understand Latin American Enlightenment criticism without the bilateral flow between the Peninsular and the Latin American fields. The theoretical component of this thesis, framed within Postcolonial Studies, proposes the reconstruction of a series of traditional theories regarding modernity, criticism, and historiography, favoring anti-Eurocentric positions.
